NVE stands for "number of the shipping unit", the English equivalent is called "Serial Shipping Container Code" (SSCC). It is a number with which shipping units (containers, pallets, packages) can be identified in a uniform way worldwide. Every participant in the supply chain can assign a SSCC to a shipping unit, if it does not already have one. It then remains the unique identifier of the unit for the rest of the supply chain. An exception to this is when individual shipping units are combined to form larger loading units (cross docking) - in this case the shipping units receive a higher-level master SSCC for the loading unit. A SSCC consists of 18 numerical characters and contains the 13-digit Global Location Number (GLN) as a central component, which can be used to uniquely identify the issuer of the SSCC (product manufacturer or logistics service provider).
